Welcome
If you've come to our head trauma Web site you're likely
looking for information and support. Our Sacramento Head
trauma Support Project intends to provide you with both -
through information and links on Head Trauma Sacramento.org
and through person-to-person contact in meetings.
It is our intent to improve the quality of life for survivors of brain
injury and their families with support services and education.
The very nature of brain injuries makes it difficult to diagnose
and treat TBI. Through sharing information and experiences we
make resources more readily available to people with traumatic
brain injury and to their families.
Our regular meetings bring together people with like interests
and concerns. We have the opportunity to listen to and learn
from guest speakers in addition to sharing important personal
experiences.
The Sacramento Head trauma Support project also sponsors
special groups and events. Our Survivor Group meets weekly
and offers support for those recovering from brain injuries
through camaraderie, social interaction and special activities.
We also sponsor a weekly family-Caregiver Support group that
addresses the special challenges of caring for a loved one with
TBI.
What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an insult to the brain, not of
degenerative or congenital nature, but caused by an external
physical force that may produce diminished or altered state of
consciousness. This results in an impairment of cognitive
abilities or physical functioning.
Consequences of TBI can Include"

| attention, concentration and memory; slowed thinking; speech and language impairments; reduced spatial skills; poor judgment and poor planning. | ||
| Physical impairments such as seizures, muscle | |
| spasticity or paralysis; poor coordination; fatigue; vision or hearing changes; loss of smell and taste, and headaches. | ||
| Emotions and Behavior such as anxiety, | |
| depression, anger, agitation, impulsivity, disinhibition, self-centerdness, misperception of others and poor self-awareness. |
